The Pet food industry is a massive industry. It is estimated that it is worth around US$115 billion currently.  Pet food is the term used to refer to any product that gives nutrition to a domestic animal.  

People who want to get involved in the pet food industry might do this by –

  • Producing ingredients
  • Supplying raw materials
  • Producing any additives or preservatives
  • Making equipment, packaging etc for the products
  • Providing education and training to others
  • Being involved in transportation or logistics

  • If you plan to produce your own pet food to sell, whether in a business premises or your own home, you will need to comply with local rules and regulations relating to the production of animal food. So make sure that you are aware of these rules.

 How will you market and sell it?

Carrying out market research is an important first step. –

  • Who are your competitors?
  • Is there a niche that you can fill?
  • Is there a demand for your product?

Then consider - How will you market the product?  Building your brand and creating a strong online presence is important, even if you decide to have a physical store. 

You will need a unique and noticeable brand name, logo and packaging for your product. You want to be noticed and remembered.

You might consider taking a small first step, such as, producing –

  • Pet treats
  • Dog cakes
  • Biscuits
  • Raw Food
  • Kibble and other mixes

In recent years, there has been a growth in people buying pet food from local businesses or smaller companies. Smaller organisations can produce more unusual and bespoke pet foods to meet the demands of pet owners.  More and more pet owners treat their pets like one of the family, so they want high quality, healthy, food for their pets. There is definitely a market for people to produce and sell their pet food for sale.
